Upshot = 一锤定乾坤
Upshot
中文中有“一锤定乾坤”的说法，意思是“结果如何就看这一锤子”了；英语中有个词叫upshot，表示“结果；结局”，其中就有点“一锤定乾坤”的意味。
Upshot 最早出现在1531年，在16世纪的英国，upshot是个射箭用语，本义是射箭比赛中的“最后一射”，也就是“定乾坤”的那一射。之后，upshot很快有了引申义，用来表示“某个过程或某件事情的最后结局”。从19世纪早期起，upshot的比喻义开始被广泛使用。
看一个句子：The upshot of the disagreement was that they broke up the partnership.（争执的结局就是他们解除了合作关系。）
今天，upshot还可作“结论、要点”讲，如：the upshot of these paragraphs（这些段落的要点）。
