Retirees 'stunned'

Americans nearing retirement and recent retirees said they were anxious and frustrated following a second day of market turmoil that hit their 401(k)s after President Donald Trump’s escalation of tariffs.

As the impending tariffs shook the global economy Friday, people who were planning on their retirement accounts to carry them through their golden years said the economic chaos was hitting too close to home.

kra34 at
Some said they are pausing big-ticket purchases and reconsidering home renovations, while others said they fear their quality of life will be adversely affected by all the turmoil.

“I’m just kind of stunned, and with so much money in the market, we just sort of have to hope we have enough time to recover,” said Paula, 68, a former occupational health professional in New Jersey who retired three years ago.

Paula, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she feared retaliation for speaking out against Trump administration policies, said she was worried about what lies ahead.

“What we’ve been doing is trying to enjoy the time that we have, but you want to be able to make it last,” Paula said Friday. “I have no confidence here.”

Trump fulfilled his campaign promise this week to unleash sweeping tariffs, including on the United States’ largest trading partners, in a move that has sparked fears of a global trade war. The decision sent the stock market spinning. On Friday afternoon, the broad-based S&P 500 closed down 6%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 5.8%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 2,200 points, or about 5.5%.

Tony Bennett. Photo: UVA AthleticsTony Bennett doesnt seethe, doesnt bristle. After a look at the second half stats from Virginias 68-65 loss at Pitt last night, he came about as close as he ever will. You cant give up, for us, 45 points in the second half, and expect to, you know, we still had a  stanleys cups chance, but that wont cut it defensively. Well just have to get back and go back to the drawing board,  Bennett told reporters after the loss.Virginia led by  botella stanley 13 in the first half, 10 at halftime, and the margin was 12 four minutes into the second half. Then Pitt started asserting its will.Bennett conceded that maybe things  came a little easy  as the Cavaliers built up their double-digit leads, but he had told his team going in to be mindful of how Pitt had been able to get things together in the second half of its 76-74 win over preseason  1 North Carolina last week, in which the Panthers had trailed by nine in the second half before rallying. They were touching the paint pretty easy in transition, and then even we were back, they were getting to the glass, and thats what they did to Carolina,  Bennett said.  Ive watched them, and theyre doing a good job. They get aggressive, and theyve got physical guys and tough-minded guys, and they started getting aggressive. They got to  Stanley cup website the line, we got to line four times, they drew fouls, theyre down the floor, they run good stuff, you know, then they switch some things up defensively, and we missed some of our shots and struggled a little bit. We knew that in the first half, we didnt play particularly well offensively, but at the same time, we didnt feel that we played our best defensive half, that we gave up way too many second-chance points. They kind of just bullied us around and out-toughed us in the first half. That was our focal point in the second half,  Harris said.A Mike Tobey jumper at the 12:31 mark gave UVa. its first lead of the game at 39-38. A mini five-point run that began at the 8:39 mark with a C.J. Leslie jumper and ended at 8:15 with a Scott Wood three-pointer gave the Pack a 47-42 lead and the momentum.Evan Nolte answered with
